Yet another reason to love Spring

We knew they were flickers by their markings and their voices, but their sounds were new. We knew they were flickers because we've been watching their activity around the house since they carved two nests (the first a decoy, of course) in the snag across the greenway last spring. And now sitting outside on the first deck-worthy day of the Spring, two flickers making a fuss above. As we watch through the branches we can see their noises are accompanied by a dance. One, beak in the air, begins a 5-second reach and retract of its neck, making a sound a bit like a squeaky toy sounds inside a big dog's mouth. The second joins in. Then they rest, the second closing its eyes for a couple of breaths in between. Then they repeat. Again and Again. Love Spring.
