Native to Chile and Argentina, Araucaria araucana, commonly known as Monkey Puzzle Tree, was alive 200 million years ago and kept company with dinosaurs. Spine-like needles acted as protection from ancient grazing animals now long extinct.
Monkey Puzzle Trees can live for 1,000 years and grow to 50m high with a trunk diameter of over 3m. Their bark is fire resistant, so islands of them can grow on the slopes of rocky volcanoes, and survive lava flows!
