Pacific tree frogs are a keystone species, that is they have a large effect on their environment relative to their abundance. Such species are described as playing a critical role in maintaining the structure of an ecological community, affecting many other organisms and helping determine the types and numbers of various other species in the community. The loss of wetlands and natural ponds eliminates breeding areas; chemicals from pesticides and runoff poison tree frogs and their food.
