The first daffodils
The first daffodils of the season appeared in Kristen's yard, a handful tucked in beside the porch where the moles didn't look. Truth is they were Mary's long before Kristen's six-year-old was born, back before Mary's husband was killed while walking on the highway and Mary was urged out of the house and into assisted living to ease the burden on her son. It is ironic that daffodils are of the narcissus genus, named after the Greek youth who was so obsessed with his own reflection in the water he died gazing at it; while Mary's work left a legacy of unselfishness for Kristen and the rest of us to enjoy.
