Hawthorne Bridge

What you do today affects others for generations

Dr. James C. Hawthorne, father of mental health care in Oregon, had a vision to connect East Portland to the more established downtown area.  Conceived by John Waddell, inventor of the vertical lift bridge and designer of the Steel and Interstate bridges, the Hawthorne Bridge was dedicated in 1910; and 100 years later is Portland’s main commuter route from east to west.
